OCCRL Programs of Study under the new Perkins….

IL agreement w/ U.S. Dept of Ed

Programs of Study…what are the key factors? 6 critical categories and self-assessment tool???

Data and Accountability

how to deal with data for program improvement

#6 is Program improvement and Accountability

what must you include?

inform culture

multiple assessments including PD

partnerships

labor market data (Perkins only) fore real world

data collection system–IL longitudinal data collection system, track students from entrance to college to work place

collecting reliable data at the education level….

requires setting performance targets–”they” decide and inform “us”

gap analysis data

Labor Market Element #4

need to look at the labor markets…

use that to examine the curriculum…should we walk away from a long-standing traditional program for something new and up-coming

e.g. Ag classes…should we move “green” rather than status-quo

Consider investing in re-newed training for CTE teachers which may be more expensive/out of state, etc., to specialize these courses….do we offer health care and technical areas? yes, through GAVC

Should the district have a data team? content teachers, Admin team, math teachers drive the team….ID students have low PLAN scores, taken ACT prep, taken an pre-ACT and examine if the intervention helped…so teams of teachers looking at “stuff”

Consistency of pulling data is HUGE….who should do it?

Evidence Data through Project Lumina?????

Element 8..

collected data are disaggregated and cohort based to provide gap analysis on different student groups of purposes of equity

grade distribution data….who sees it?

how many A’s, B’s, C’s, D’s, F’s…..compare to discipline and attendance data as well as other classes.

maybe looks like “bad teachers” but really data analysis will show what the concentration of students in a class of high failures shows us in relation to a larger picture…NOT BAD teacher…but what about the students

changing software programs or adding programs…change the data is captured…does MM and PS show the same info….

Formulation of the Problem is far more essential than it’s solution.

The ability to raise new questions, new possibilities, to regard old problems from a new angle requires creative imagination and marks real advances in science.

Respect the Resistors in Educational Change

Leading n Culture of Change by Michael Fulian…focus on change, build relationships, respect divesity, share critical scrutiny

RTi – Good “IDEA” Policy

Not new

Not limited to special ed

not a program, curriculum strategy or intervention

approach for redesigning and establishing teaching & establishing teaching and learning environments that are effective, efficient, relevant and durable for aALL students, families and educators

RTi is a Paradigm shift…from teaching to learning

consider teaching staff the history of RTi so they realize they’ve been doing RTi

must now show the other piece….that we’ve been doing other interventions for the student before moving to special ed

Why use it?

Core Principals–problem solving, problem analysis, etc.

RTi…use parents as partners in creating/implementing interventions

Richard Dufore? ? ? Parent Involvement

Consider a Homework Club for Intervention…

Problem—not turning in homework

Why? work to do at home/babysit, etc

Solution–homework club

follow-up–student post-it notes the work and monitor places it in teachers’ mailboxes

What does Tier 1 look like?

Universal Screening—we use SRI at freshman….Evergreen Park does every student, every year and every freshman does it without accommodations…plus EPAS…they also do Vantage, Learning Express

Vision and Hearing Screenings

Pyramids of Interventions for failures

Professional Learning Communities (late-start each wed all teachers meet in teams from 8:10 to 8:50 and every other wed fresh/soph students come in for character ed w/ peer mentors and counselors/)

Peer Tutoring

ACT Prep for Juniors

Parent-teacher conferences

report card pick-up

Mastery Learning…(they do in all Math courses)

Re-teaching

Professional development

parent workshops

HOmework club

Other classroom intervention/instruction

Tier 2

lots of before and after school tutoring/programs

SXU sends tutors

reading enricnments

math maniacs, power hour, saturday morning breakfast club

junior level co-teaching in math and reading

english concepts for seniors

Read 180

Remedial math and english for seniors

frosh/soph mandatory weekly tutoring

Tier 3

504 plan

referral for IEP

individualized instruction

pull-out instruction

health emergency

homebound services

alternative placement

summer school for credit recovery

other interventions

Behvioral Issues

h.s. not required for behavior

but must meet social-emotional learning standards…PD on these

some behavioral interventions

PBS : required to a point, applicable, effective

what is PBS: behavior through positive reinforcement, plan appropriate interventions for behaviors w/ which students most struggle

Mendler’s suggestions on using these principles…e.g. showing simple courtesies, etc

create hope in students…..

acknowledge your mistakes

respect power

allow students some choice

PEP: privacy, eye contact, proximity

Build Relationships

21 day interventions—for 21 days make positive contact w/ an at-risk student

Staff and Pets relationship bulletin board—gives kids something to ask teachers about

Express Enthusiasm

Give kids Goals for PBS

positive place

closer community

rid of bullying

no negative behavior

Look at the PPT Mustang Matrix…how to act in each area of hte building

Works with PLC’s, coaching teachers, School Improvement Models…

Ask teachers to define student achievement first…then what comes next?

Answer traditionally teachers….

STOP…THINK…teachers don’t cause student achievement, STUDENTS cause student achievement…

Design lessons to get students to get involved/do what they need to do….because designing lessons has to be about getting students to do what students need to do to achievement.

Ask yourself…what signs would you look for in a classroom that would predict student achievement will go up? what behavior would predict that behavior…

students questioning

participation–explaining their learning/talking…Student voice

Self-relience

giving time to the work…

an emotion present..sometimes it’s a body language, sometimes a tone

risk taking

having Remedial kids observe AP kids….help the kids understand what the appropriate behavior is–not quiet but maybe demanding

Step back from teacher behavior…to student behavior…then on to teacher behavior

REMEMBER: Teaching is a profession…that means EXPERIMENTING!!! like doctors and lawyers, you tinker until you get it right…not one right answer…

high achieving cultures have different teacher strategies/behaviors but the common link is high-achieving students!!!

The way to decide what you’re doing is effective, the students are doing what they students have to do…THAT’s IT!

What do you students look like in each of these stops on a continuum: ……..Fear……Attention…..Comfort……Bored……

Suggestions: maximun student effort “just in time learning” between Fear and Attention…cannot be too scared! This is why one-on-one tutoring is so effective…allows you to jump to the next level or pullback to repeat…no getting bored, no fear, ….no over-exertion, but no boredom…like a personal trainer @ the gym…

Fear in a high school student looks like bored….need to engage…how ?? Raise the anxiety level!! give a harder problem, move closer, etc…students may act out BAD…

Efforts x Ability (focuses on a manageable task) = Success

View of Ability….Fixed? Growth? Ability is cultivated through effort….Ability grows then if you believe this…and effort multiples ability!!!

many kids think Ability = Success …. parents reinforce this…ooops

some kids think Ability + Effort = Success …. use weight-lifting as example..set benchmark and each 8 week checks on ability…

kids think Smart = NO effort!!!!

Kids need a picture of success…the most successful students have a picture of their future…work toward it…#1 behavior with successful kids was that the most successful adult in that kids life was an adult who always talked about the future with them….

5th grade teachers takes kids to auditorium 1st day of school and dresses them in cap and gown and takes their “graduation photo”…paste it in planner…10 minutes everyday to reflect, think, comment oh what you are doing to get their…for 180 days this vision is before them….LIFE SKILLS????? PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY

Updraft/Downdraft about peer group and teachers that the kids get caught in a group at high school……

Teach kids what effort is…If you want the kids to put in effort, you have to teach them what effort is…help differentiate among ability, effort, degree of difficulty or luck.

Teach EFFORT…the majority of freshman cannot explain your learning style, then how can you put a study plan together…so need to teach them how!!!! Help them uncover how they best learn…then teach them how to study to for their style–kinesthetic kid…vocab on note cards, definition on the back…cards on ground….dribble to each..check definition…do it until you can dribble to all without looking at the card

Outliers by Malcom Gladwell….exceptional time practicing…

Repetition of success…..continue to practice even after you get it…NOPE…keep practicing

Ask kids to give themselves an “Effort Score” w/ explanation of why????? Why not???? Get kids to recognize their effort contribution Begins a conversation…! Why low grade and high effort

Manageable Task….if you know how to do? do these two if you need practice? do these If you don’t know how to begin? do this gets all kids to put forth effort

Tapping Students Efforts by Steven Barkley

comment: We need to do this!!!! Let’s do a one day on this with teachers….as we determine all the “best practices”

What makes you successful? When you ask that question, people lie 5,000 interviewed….soooooo…..asked beyond the obvious…..weird, interesting, disturbing, strange

#1 realtor in US: tapped into 3700 moving employees for husband’s company….what was it? A willingness to tapped into the list

from mailroom to CEO: talk really well behind peoples backs and it will get back to them…not so smart, not so successful….but talked really good behind people’s backs because he was trusted and their stories became “good news” Becomes influential. Now managers come to him, so middle-management, etc., etc….until he becomes CEO…typically use tactices that work

teacher…extraordinary success w/ her students who went on to do great things: secret–always acted interested in what students said “tell me more about that” and “wow, really” buZz words that kids responded to and would open up to her…acted amazed about her students (even when not!) and her kids seemed amazed by themselves…be impressed by what they bring to her room..students acted to impress her even though her amazement was sometimes mechanical and forced. Not a great teacher but got the kids to perform

Paris Hilton’s ex-publicist: not the wonder-kin but why her? Created her own fame by faking her fame until it became real…willing to do what others were not willing to do

take advantages of your advantages…make it work

3 Lies: positive attitude is paramount; genuius is the platform; better idea/product/offer/concept…believe these and we have to reinvent yourself and have to do this and it’s not you so cannot get “it”..success

Most successful: negative thinking; know I can do this because I saw the problems because I’m a problem person…if you see it half empty you’re more likely to try to fill it up! Decide to fix the problem not believe in the “good”….smartest person isn’t the top-dog—smartest persons tend to work for the boss, genius tends to lack clarity Keep it clear, level is too high to be influential–need to be smart and clear…but ego gets int he way of seeing your lack of clarity by talking above people…..don’t need to change your attitude or self to succeed…need to take advantage of who you are…don’t need to be marvelous and wonderful–not charismatic or brilliant

Behavior will Betray your Skill…doesn’t matter how “smart” and “good” you are if you create holes in with bad behavior Bad plumber, Tonya Harding/Michael Jackson….people are looking for a reason to choose someone else….ARE YOU PREFERRED?!?!?!?!? Being good at what you do is one thing…being preferred is something else?

Do you make good impressions on people? the most successful are the ones who deliver what they have to offer into the arms of what others believed in in the first place…first impression…be clear, and good, and let mediocre ideas rise…Great idea presented badly and mediocre idea presented well….Bad/Mediocre wins. Are you realistic for how you’re viewed????? People don’t choose what’s best, they choose what’s comfortable. Being seen matters, impression matters…going to get your idea sold.

Take advantage of advantages; take a look at how you’re viewed.

Take a journey to see how you’re actually viewed.

Your gift if your curse…what you’re best at, holds you back…shy allows you to push; not that smart makes you less threatening and will create trust/more info; look to your problem to find your advantage

Is that problem an advantage ?

Are you willing to leverage your relationships to get ahead? Are you willing to move past those people who don’t move you forward?

You get to define your life! Life is not fair so take all your advantages.

M&M ideas…each color means something/requires the answer to a question…you decide what each color is–a concept, skill, problem

Acrostic Self-Esteem Activity….use vocabulary words from class, review, etc.

goal is always to have students active in someway…
